Lorenza Mochi-Onori has done an immense service for scholars in her publication L’Archivio segreto dei Barberini.
She has clarified the complicated history of the Barberini family legacy and made Enrico Di Dominici’s precious 1844 inventory fully available for study. Between the complications of marriages, inheritance, greed, and legal clashes, she has silhouetted how great works of art in large numbers, amassed by the family of Urbano VIII, were used as pawns in the battle for social and monetary power in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Roman aristocracy and beyond. Thanks to ABOUT ART ONLINE for making this fine work available online.
