The National Gallery of Art (Washington) has just announced the 28th annual Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art. Entitled “Blood Joining Blood: The Immersive in Caravaggio’s Malta” the lecture will be delivered by Keith Sciberras on 17 November 2024 at 14.00hrs at the East Building Auditorium of the NGA.
In his final years, Caravaggio painted ‘The Beheading of St. John the Baptist’ (1608) for the altar of the Oratory of the Decollato in Valletta. In his lecture, Keith Sciberras of the University of Malta will dive into Caravaggio’s use of complex spatial relationships and audience immersion, supported by Sciberras’s decades of site experience and archival research.
The Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art features distinguished scholars presenting original research. This annual lecture series offered by the National Gallery of Art began in 1997 and is named after the great specialist of Italian art Sydney J. Freedberg (1914–1997). Professor Freedberg earned his PhD from Harvard University in 1940, where he taught for 29 years until he was appointed chief curator of the National Gallery of Art in 1983.
Keith Sciberras is a specialist on Caravaggio, Roman baroque sculpture, and Italian baroque painting. He is a professor of art history at the University of Malta, where he is also a member of the senate and the rector’s delegate for the university’s historical buildings. He has curated several exhibitions, including the Malta Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2022. His most recent publication is Art as Life: Caravaggio in Malta (2023).

La National Gallery of Art (Washington) ha appena annunciato la 28esima edizione della Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art. Intitolata “Blood Joining Blood: The Immersive in Caravaggio’s Malta”, la conferenza sarà tenuta da Keith Sciberras il 17 novembre 2024 alle 14.00 presso l’East Building Auditorium della NGA.
Nei suoi ultimi anni, Caravaggio dipinse “La decollazione di San Giovanni Battista” (1608) per l’altare dell’Oratorio del Decollato a La Valletta. Nella sua conferenza, Keith Sciberras dell’Università di Malta approfondirà l’uso di complesse relazioni spaziali e l’immersione del pubblico da parte di Caravaggio, supportato da decenni di esperienza sul posto e di ricerca d’archivio di Sciberras.
La Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art presenta illustri studiosi che presentano ricerche originali. Questo ciclo di conferenze annuali offerto dalla National Gallery of Art è iniziato nel 1997 e prende il nome dal grande specialista dell’arte italiana Sydney J. Freedberg (1914–1997).
